Hi, I’m Monolith.

As of 2026, I’m based in Hakata, Fukuoka.

In this article, I’ll introduce four specialty coffee shops around Ropponmatsu that I have actually visited and would love to go back to, plus one bonus coffee space that I personally really like.

I chose these places based on the following three points:

The coffee itself is delicious.

The atmosphere is comfortable.

Even if the shop is popular, it is still relatively easy to relax there.

Since this article is mainly for coffee lovers, I have left out cafés where food is the main attraction.

I hope this helps anyone looking for a good coffee shop around Ropponmatsu!

Small Roastery Homachiame Coffee

A carefully brewed cup made with excellent hand-drip technique

North of Ropponmatsu Station, on the way toward Ohori Park and Gokoku Shrine, there is a quiet residential area in Ropponmatsu 1-chome.
In one corner of that neighborhood, inside a renovated room of an old apartment building, you will find Small Roastery Homachiame Coffee.

The shop itself is small, occupying a renovated room in an old apartment building, and it has a somewhat charming, cute atmosphere.

At the same time, the coffee served here is very serious.
The owner, who has achieved a high placement in the Japan Hand Drip Championship, carefully brews each cup by hand drip.

When I took my first sip, I couldn’t help quietly saying, “Wait, this is really good.”

I also saw the roasted beans being carefully sorted one by one.
That made me realize that this delicious cup is supported not only by brewing technique, but also by this kind of meticulous attention to detail.

I recommend this shop to anyone who wants to slowly enjoy a carefully brewed hand-drip coffee in a quiet space.

Basking Coffee ropponmatsu

A shop where you can taste the beans before choosing your cup

Basking Coffee ropponmatsu is the Ropponmatsu branch of BASKING COFFEE, whose main shop is located in Chihaya.
Although it is only a few minutes’ walk from Ropponmatsu Station, it is tucked slightly into a side street, making it the kind of place you want to casually drop by while walking around the area.

On the second floor, there is a calm café space, as well as a darker, simpler room toward the back that feels almost like a meditation room.
I spent my time in the back space, where there was very little visual noise. It felt like a place where I could quietly focus on the coffee.

One of the distinctive features of Basking Coffee is that you can taste the beans when ordering.
After choosing your beans through tasting, you can have your coffee brewed by French press, AeroPress, or paper drip using a V60.

I chose the coffee of the day.
The beans were from Yunnan, China, and I had them brewed with a French press.
The fermented aroma added depth to the sweetness of the coffee, and it was extremely delicious.

When I visited in April 2026, the coffee of the day was 350 yen per cup.
It is quite rare to find specialty coffee at this price, and even after visiting many coffee shops, this stood out to me as impressively affordable.

I recommend this shop to anyone who wants to taste different beans and choose a cup that matches their personal preference.

There is also a darker, calm space toward the back that feels almost like a private room.
French press coffee
I chose Chinese beans. The fermented aroma was especially memorable.

COFFEEMAN Roasting & Planning Café

A cup that turns bitterness into something delicious

COFFEEMAN Roasting & Planning Café is a coffee shop located in a back alley in Ropponmatsu 4-chome, south of Ropponmatsu Station.
If you walk down the side street next to the popular bakery Matsupan, which faces the main road, you will see the shop on your left.

Inside, there are around four counter seats and several table seats.
When I visited, I was seated at the counter.

As the word “Planning” in the shop name suggests, they can help you choose recommended beans based on your preferred flavor profile and then brew the coffee for you.
One of the things I enjoyed was being able to chat with the owner about coffee.

When I visited, people kept coming in one after another, either to buy beans or to drink coffee.
Seeing the natural conversations between customers and the staff made me feel that this is a shop deeply rooted in the local community.

The menu even lists the roast level down to decimal points, which gives you a sense of how deeply they pursue coffee.

Of course, that attention to detail was also clear when I actually drank the coffee.

I had the Rokuyon Blend, with a roast level of 6.4.
What stood out to me was how pleasant the bitterness remained in the aftertaste.

It was different from the kind of specialty coffee that highlights bright acidity in lightly roasted beans.
Instead, this was a cup that allowed me to properly enjoy bitterness as part of the flavor.

Another great point was how the flavor changed as the temperature shifted.
I was impressed that it tasted good at every stage of that change.

I recommend this shop to anyone who wants to enjoy not only light roasts, but also the bitterness and richness of coffee.

Shop exterior
Walk down the alley on the right side of the bakery, and you will see the shop on your left.
Interior
There are table seats, but I especially recommend the counter, where you can communicate with the staff through coffee.
Menu
A menu where the roast level is shown numerically. The decimal-point notation gives a strong sense of their attention to detail.

Apartment coffee door

Choose your beans and your preferred brewing method

Apartment coffee door is a coffee shop located in the Ropponmatsu 4-chome area, a short walk south of Ropponmatsu Station.

The interior has a refined design based on the texture of concrete.
At the same time, since the entrance was open when I visited, the atmosphere also felt friendly and approachable.

When I visited, I was able to choose not only the beans, but also the brewing method.
The options included paper drip, French press, and espresso.

I chose a rather unusual combination: French press with light-roasted beans.

Surprisingly, this combination worked very well.
The rounded mouthfeel typical of French press matched nicely with the bright aroma of the light roast, making it much easier to drink than I had expected.

I recommend this shop to anyone who wants to explore their ideal cup by changing the combination of beans and brewing methods.

Interior
The entrance was open, giving the place a slightly hidden-base-like atmosphere.

It was rare to be able to enjoy light-roasted beans brewed with a French press.

Bonus|Starbucks Coffee Ropponmatsu Tsutaya Books

A coffee space surrounded by books, perfect for book lovers

This is a bonus spot.
It is a little different from the independent shops and roasteries introduced above, but I like this space so much as a place where you can spend time surrounded by books while drinking coffee that I wanted to include it.

This Starbucks is located on the second floor of Ropponmatsu 421, a commercial facility right outside Ropponmatsu Station, and is attached to Tsutaya Books.

It follows the Book & Café style often seen in urban Tsutaya locations, allowing you to enjoy books and coffee in the same space.

One of the great things about this location is that Ropponmatsu, while slightly away from the busy centers of Tenjin and Hakata, has such a spacious Book & Café environment.

It is close to the station and located in a complex that also includes the Fukuoka City Science Museum, a supermarket, and restaurants.
This Starbucks gets quite crowded on weekends, but because there are many seats, it is still relatively easy to find a spot if the timing is right.

I recommend this place to anyone who wants to enjoy time spent surrounded by books rather than focusing only on the coffee itself.

Interior
The shop is integrated with Tsutaya Books, making it irresistible for book lovers.
Interior
There are many seats, although it is almost full on weekends. Still, you can often find somewhere to sit.
